Flood-Resilient River Home
A young, spry couple reached out about creating a home in downtown Hallowell Maine. The primary request for the design was to achieve single floor living that would support them into their golden years. These requirements allowed the team to become better acquainted with the Aging in Place standards.
The approved design responds to its surrounding contexts, such as sun orientation, the loud neighboring street, and the cautious Hallowell Historic District zoning. A major influence was the heavy flooding of the Kennebec river, which recently has had flood waters up to 15' above the shoreline. To combat this, the main level has been raised just above this line and the cladding around it are all made of water resistant Cementous material, minimizing damage. Above the high water line, the building takes on a more contextual look, fitting better within the historic downtown.
